CALLIGRAM PROJECT

Butterfly Calligram

When asked to write a letter to myself twenty years from now, I truly had no idea how I was going to start. As of right now I have no idea what I am going to do tomorrow let alone twenty years from now. However, once I started writing, I found it hard to stop. Writing this letter wasn't necessarily something I would've done on my own, however it was very necessary for me to do. Writing a letter to my future self really allowed me to reflect on the things I love about my life but also note the things I wish to change over the next twenty years. My letter reminded me that life isn't always going to be easy but, in the end, if you work hard and apprentice each day it will all pay off in the long run. Much like a butterfly, humans go through a metamorphosis too (not physically but mentally). As of right now I am in the chrysalis stage, waiting to find myself and become a butterfly. In twenty years, I hope to have gained my wings and flutter with vibrant colors. Just like a butterfly we all have the capacity to become the best version of ourselves. Within the letter to my future self, I highlight everything I wish to accomplish over the next twenty years to become the best version of myself and become a butterfly.

Within this project, the three main tools that were used in Adobe Illustrator were curvature tool, selection tool, and type on a path tool. To begin with a traced an overall outline of the butterfly and flower based on the inspiration image (pasted below) on Google. Using the curvature tool, I outlined everything. After much trial and error, the outline of the calligram was completed. However, the words need to be added to each line. Using the type on a path tool, each line was highlighted and then a segment from my letter was pasted. As I went through each line a different part of my letter was highlighted. After the entire letter was pasted onto the calligram, that's when the text was changed using the fill option to fit the color of the butterfly. My inspiration was a monarch butterfly so the butterfly on the calligram was different shades of orange along with black. I love pink so I decided that the flower was going to be a vibrant pink color.

Overall, this calligram captures the beauty of life and how growth is inevitable. Over the next twenty years I hope my spirit will come out beautiful just as a butterfly does after it comes out of its cocoon.
