Illustrator Tutorials for Beginners
Within this video the artist gave the viewer a recap of how to use the knife, scissors, and eraser tools in Adobe Illustrator. The artist highlighted that using the eraser tool you are not erasing pixels per se, but you are redrawing paths. I thought it was very interesting how you could use the scissors tool to manipulate the different parts of the letters such as rounding, making paths, and using it to clean up the marks that you made. I also learned that the knife tool is not the most accurate method of editing text because it loosely follows the path that you make. Additionally, you can use keyboard shortcuts to help make more efficient art. In the video she used a group selection tool a shortcut on her computer which allows you to section one thing and group it together with another.
I believe that the hardest part of using all these tools will be realizing what they can do. For example, I did not know you could crop of different segments of part of a text. Getting down the hand eye coordination will be very important when it comes to making art on Illustrator because they keyboard shortcuts will be very efficient. A tool I believe that will be the easiest to use is the eraser because it seems more straightforward than the scissors and the knife tool.
This video displayed how one could overlap typed letters in Illustrator. In the example the letters DSG were used to create a monogram type overlap. Using the shortcut with the grouping tool the artist ungrouped each letter, so she was able to manipulate the location of each of the letters. After the letters were ungrouped, they were then moved to the desired location. After the letters were placed in their specific spot, the artist looked at all the loose layers and brought the S to back to get the overlapped effect.
first the letters must be ungrouped then change position of letters to desired location and regroup. Overall, I believe that the hardest part of using the layer technique will looking at all the layers of the image. Within those 3 letters there were ten different layers. Something easy about this technique is grouping and ungroup all the letters.
In the video the artist split a word in half right on the center letter which in this case was T . Using the Type section at the top left of the screen allows the letter to be split and then using CRLT O officially splits the letter. Using a keyboard shortcut, a ruler can appear by pressing CRLT R, which allows you to measure out your exact measurements on the page. In order to split the letter in half the knife tool was used. The using SHIFT +P the perspective grid tool is turned on. This technique seems very confusing once the perspective grid tool is turned on. This technique uses a variety of tools. Once I get a basic understanding of the overall program and how to use each tool, I will be able to understand everything more.
